The So-Called "Bounty" Scheme PDF Print E-mail

This really is a misnomer as no "bounty" was paid to the immigrants nor did anyone else receive a "bounty". James Donaldson has written and self-published a book called Farewell to the Heather, subtitled Government assisted migrants from the highlands and islands of Scotland to NSW 1837 - 1840, ISBN 0 9756966 0 2, which explains a great detail the historical facts behind the large number of Scottish people coming to Australia in that period.

The book is A4 in size, glue bound and has almost 300 pages. There are no images or illustrations. I have a copy of this book and have exchanged a number of emails with the author. If you would like a copy of the book please drop me a line at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it and let me know. I think James still has a couple of copies available. Alternatively your local library may have a copy. The price of the book was around AUD50.

From reading the book and from my exchange of emails with James, I make the following comments.

Charles Bateson has written a book on this subject which was originally published in 1959. It has generally been accepted by historians and scholars as the standard work on its subject.

This book contains information not only of the voyages themselves but also the administrative system under which the ships were selected, manned, provisioned and despatched.
