The Gregory Family that I am researching is the family who are the ancestors and descendants of the William Gregory who married Sarah NICHOLSON in Sydney on 20 August 1838 and who died on 21 July, 1893.  My cousin, Jan Gregory and I have been unable to determine whether this William Gregory is the same person as the William Gregory, alias William Greaves who was transported to Australia as a convict on board the "Lloyds" in 1833.

All of the evidence that we have gathered indicates that they are one and the same but we cannot be sure. Jan has completed a tremendous amount of research on this question as well as researching all of his descendants. She and her husband Phil have written and self-published a book on her work. This book is titled "The Newcastle Connection" and sub-titled "A Gregory Family History", ISBN 978-0-9750011-2-7. To highlight the research that Jan made, here is a copy of the lead-in chapter from her book.

Held at St. Augustine's Church, Merewether

It is pleasing to report that the Gregory Gathering held on the weekend 31 March to 1 April was successful. This success was mainly due to the hard work by Phil and Jan Gregory. They had a couple of helpers, including Maree Payne.

Jan reports:

Missing Information on Family Photographs PDF Print E-mail

As I get the time, I have been scanning various photographs for inclusion in our family history. As is normal, almost all of the photographs have no identification as to who are featured in the photographs or where they were taken. I am therefore seeking help from family members to identify the people and locations featured.

So, on this page, I have included some of these photos. I have also included some photos that I would like confirmation of the information I have. If you can help, please let me know via email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

I will place more photos on here as time permits. Naturally I will remove photos once they have been identified.

Jan Gregory visited Newcastle in 2006 and met with William and Ann Gregory's great grandson, Ross Bartle. Up until early 2007, Ross had been living in a house on the block originally owned by William and Ann at 17 Farquhar Street, the Junction in Newcastle. The original Gregory home had been damaged in the 1989 earthquake and had to be rebuilt.

The great news is that Ross had kept the old family bible along with other historical papers. Jan has supplied me four images of some pages in the bible and they can be viewed here.
