Also Known As Mitchells Island Anglican
St Mark's Anglican Church on Mitchells Island was opened on 6 June 1872 and the first burial in the adjoining cemetery appears to have taken place the same year. Paul Fitzgerald visited the cemetery in April 2008 and made digital images of every visible inscription.
He says that there are a number of unmarked graves as well as several others with surrounds or markers that could not be identified. One of the features of the cemetery is a memorial to the men of Mitchells Island who lost their lives during both world wars. Close to the church is a columbarium that displays over 30 plaques. The grounds were in excellent condition. Administration details Mitchells Island is within the Anglican Diocese of Newcastle. Enquiries regarding St Mark's and its cemetery should be directed to the Diocesan Office, Newcastle.
