In part:

"It has been a while since I last contacted you about my Schmitzer family history, but I have not been idle. With wonderful help from people from Rootsweb and the Gow family I have learned a lot about the past lives of the Schmitzers. I know a little more about my GG Grandmother Catherine Frey ( this is the correct spelling by the way) after obtaining many of the relevant family birth, marriage and death certs. Their children's birth certs. all state that George and Catherine were married at East Maitland in1855/6 and the Schneider/Frey marriage cert. you recommended I obtain was revealing, even though it was obviously transcribed and extremely brief. I know that they did not speak English and have been told that the Dahenfeld dialect could account for the Schneider/Schmitzer confusion. Coincidentally, the marriage witnesses were JOHAN Schneider and Wilhelmina KOPP ( George's brother was Johannes and his sister in law Rosina Kopp) It states that Catherine was a widow......so this would also complicate my search. In short, at this stage, I believe that this is their marriage. I have really enjoyed reading and learning about the times they lived in, both here and in Germany, so it has been a really worthwhile experience for me."

Brian Smith wrote in an email:

"Hi Stuart, My Great Grandfather Johannas Anton Schmitzer Born 28/2/1824 Died 8/9/1880 refer attachments about vineyard and death in the Manning River near the Scotts River punt which he had the licence to operate. Also Uncle John/Jack Schmitzer Born 1910 Died 1/6/1956. Uncle Jack drove a milk truck for a living around the Manning area picking up milk cans from the farms, while doing this he also picked up school children and dropped them off at school at times there my have been 3 or 4.On the 1/6/1956 with a load of milk and we know 3 kids 2 of which were sisters he approached the Scott's Creek punt drove down the ramp and as the front wheels touched the punt ramp it pushed the punt out and the truck with all on board went under it resulting in all four perishing, there is a clamp that must be on the steel cable to prevent this happening. There was a story that there where 4 kids that day and Uncle Jack brought one of them to the surface went back down but never resurfaced, the police diver who I think was called Jim Souter or Sonter recovered the bodies. I have searched for newspaper and Coroners reports and have found nothing, maybe with your connections you can .Is this not an unusual story that a Gandfather and Grandson die in the same area 76 years apart."
