Note:

From The Zucker Story:

"On 31st May 1859 he signed a petition to the Supreme Court of NSW to say he was insolvent and wished to surrender his Estate for the benefit of his creditors. This petition was accepted on the 1st June. Christian had debts amounting to £393 and assets which amounted to £261 4s. His largest asset was 15 acres of freehold land at Gannon's Bush, Cooks River, valued at £250, and mortgaged for £200. He owned household furniture worth £9 9s, a dray worth £110s, and garden implements worth 5s. Christian's creditors were Mr A Dreutler (loan of £55 in 1855, Mr McEwen (loan of £17 in 1857), Mr Gannon (who had loaned £221 in 1855 as principal and interest on mortgage of the land at Gannon's Bush). He also owed £100 to his brother Carl, for wages in 1855, 1856 and 1857.

An inventory of his effects was made by Daniel Connor on 2nd June 1859, and the meagre items listed were:

Sitting Room Spare Room 1 table 2 boxes (children's clothes) 6 chairs 1 ?unreadable 1 safe 2 mattresses and 1 pillow (claimed by Mr Lardner) Bed Room 1 Iron bedstead and bedding 1 sofa and bedding 1 dressing table 1 looking glass 1 washstand 1 chair 1 box clothes

Yard Paddock 3 saucepans 1 dray 1 boiler 1 cask 1 lot crockery 1 large box 1 goat 1 table 1 old harness 1 trough & some tins (last 4 items claimed by Mr Lardner)

A hearing in insolvency was held in the Supreme Court NSW on 21st June 1859. Mr Michael Gannon swore on oath that Christian Zucker was in debt to him for the sum of £222 16s 5d.

Christian statement was that he knew Mr Gannon of Cooks River. "1 bought some land from him for £225 - I paid him £25 - I had three pigs, an old one and two young ones. I sold one to Mr Gannon and the other two I sold more than three months ago. I sold them to support my family. I got £2 17s altogether for the pigs I sold. I never had a mare and foal my own property. I had a horse at one time - I sold him and with the money paid I tilled the land. I made nothing by the crop as the dry weather destroyed it. I made nothing by the vegetables on the farm except by the sale of some pumpkins for which I got about £1. The mare I had about five weeks ago was not mine, it was never mine. My father-in-law gave me the opportunity to sell the mare for £16 and I offered to sell her for that amount. My father-in-law gave me £16 to buy the horse. I cannot recollect the time. I bought the horse and harness for £16. I sold my own horse on New Year's Day for £30. With that money I tilled the land and bought necessaries for my wife who was very unwell. I cannot say how much was on the lands. I have been working on the land since Christmas last. I did not work for anyone before my insolvency but I have worked for others since my sequestration. I did not offer the mare for sale to any person within the last three or four weeks, as my own property. She never was mine as I never paid for her. I gave my father-in-law no security for the mare and harness as it is his own property. I might have told a neighbour that the mare was mine, but I never said I would sell it as mine. When I bought the mare at [?] & Co my father-in-law, Mr Turner, was not present. I bought her for him and with his money. I have had the mare in my possession ever since. I never paid my father-in law for her."
