Goulburn Herald. 2 April 1862. Inquest.

Transcript kindly provided by Yolonda Wyatt.

Yesterday an inquest was held in the jail, on the body of Thomas Gribbles, an old man, who had been found in the streets a few days before in a state of destitution, and who had been sent to prison for protection. There was nothing remarkable about the case, but it is arule that an inquest shall be held on every prisoner who may die in jail, even if he shall have been ill for months. The jury returned a verdict of died from natural causes.

The deceased was the husband of Mrs Gribbles, who was put on trial at the late circuit court, for obtaining goods under false pretences. She was acquited, owing to the case against her breaking down.

Directly after her release, she made herself busy in her husband's matter, and professed great sympathy for him, declaring her intention of getting him out of prison and paying for his admission into the hospital.

However, the next that was heard of her was, that she had taken coach for the Lambing Flat, without taking any further steps in the matter. The next scene in the drama is her husband's death.
