Note:

The following account of the accident was given by James Reid at the inquest held at the Duke of Edinburgh Hotel, The Junction, before the District Coroner:

"I had been gone about five minutes when I heard the deceased shouting. I immediately ran to his assistance, and found him in his bord, lying on his face with a huge lump of coal lying across his body; he seemed to have been filling a skip at the time the coal fell; I spoke to the deceased, but got no answer; David Griffiths, who followed me into the deceased bord, helped me to extricate the deceased by removing the coal from off him; he was then very weak and unable to speak; we then removed him to the top of the pit, but he died whilst we were putting him into the skip to remove him ..."

The Newcastle Morning Herald of 17 March 1877 remarked that Robert Williamson "was about seventy-seven years of age, one of the A.A. Company's oldest servants ... many of the family are now occupying respectable positions in the city, and he has a large connection throughout the district."

Note:

The "Lithgow Mercury" of 16th February 1920 reported:

"Lake Pillans was the scene of a bathing fatality about five o'clock on Saturday afternoon, when a thirteen-year old school boy, Robert Scott Williamson was drowned and of a courageous act which prevented a double tragedy. Two school boys, Robert Williamson and George Coomber ... decided to go for a bathe in Lake Pillans. The boys, neither of whom could swim hadn't been in the water long when they got out of their depth and were in difficulties. A boy on the shore saw the plight and managed to rescue Coomber but was unable to save Williamson. The body was eventually brought to shore where Dr Hutley "pronounced life extinct"."

Note:

Lake Pillans Wetlands

The iron industry was established in Lithgow in 1875 when a blast furnace was erected by James Rutherford to manufacture pig iron. By 1900, Lithgow had produced Australia's first steel. Associated with the blast furnace was Lake Pillans, which was constructed in 1911 to supply water to the blast furnace. The lake was named after Robert Pillans, Lithgow's serving Mayor at that time. The lake remained the town's aquatic focal point for many years, even after the blast furnace closed down in 1928.

After the Depression the lake fell into serious decline and was used as a dumping ground for a number of local industries. The lake was then declared dangerous and a decision was made to completely backfill the lake.

In 1988, the Blast Furnace Park redevelopment commenced with site rehabilitation and landscaping around the ruins of the remaining structures.

In 1994, rehabilitation work commenced on the reconstruction of Lake Pillans to a Wetland. The project was funded by grant monies from :- Department of Water Resources $118,000. Sydney Water $10,000. Pacific Power $5,000. Lithgow Tidy towns $28,000. (through the National Landcare Program)

Aim To reduce nutrient and other pollutants entering Farmers Creek and provide habitat for wildlife by enlarging reed beds, removing willows and replacing with native flora. Become a focal point for environmental and community education. Link the site to Blast Furnace Heritage Park. Act as a storm water retention basin during floods.

Components A large u-shaped sedimentation pond. An island with surrounding deep water moat. An open deep water area with two islands on the edge. Several large reed beds and flow control structures.

Problems Considered Potential for heavy metal mobilisation during and after construction. Retaining as much of the existing reed beds as possible. Public health and safety, including mosquito control.

Problems solved by Isolating the contaminated area by sealing all exposed contaminated areas with 300mm of clay. Liming to increase pH to limit remobilisation of heavy metals. Monitoring surface and ground water quality. Constructing pond slopes to medium inclines for public safety. Stabilising pond edges with appropriate plants. Using plants to create a physical barrier to people entering the pond area.

Who was involved Department of Water Resources Coxs River Catchment Management Committee. Lithgow City Council. Sydney Water. Department of Conservation and Land Management. Environment Protection Authority. State Rail Authority of New South Wales. Lithgow Tidy towns. Lithgow Community District Nursery. Land Environment Action Program (LEAP). Pacific Power.

Water sampling is carried out on a weekly basis by Lithgow Council in conjunction with the Department of Water Resources.
