Note: It was here that he met King Yates Jnr who introduced him to King Yates Snr. King Yates senior was a Tooheys Brewery representative and he gave Bill a job as his driver.

Note: Whilst working as an engineer in Wingham, NSW, Bill met King Yates Jnr., who introduced him to King Yates Snr. Yates Snr. was a commercial traveller for Tooheys. Yates Snr. was having trouble with his current driver and Bill was offered the job and he spent the next 3 1/2 years driving Yates Snr up and down the north coast of NSW. Generally, the Tooheys car was put on a boat at Circular Quay on either a Tuesday or Saturday night. The first stop was Newcastle for coal and then on to Byron Bay. Here the car was off-loaded and was driven by Bill to Coolangatta. From here Bill drove and Yates called in at all hotels south to Gloucester. Newcastle was handled by another Tooheys traveller.
